BRADENTON, Fla. (December 8, 2003) — The 2003 Nike Friendlies, a four-day event that featured 47 teams and more than 90 games, wrapped up today in Bradenton, Fla. with the U.S. Under-17 1987 Men’s National Team tying FC Delco U-18 and the U.S. U-17 1988s topping the Sereno Golden Eagles U-17 by a 2-1 mark. Day 3 of the Nike Friendlies saw the U.S. U-17-1988s fall to Brazil 1-0, while the 1987s top the Richmond Strikers 3-1. Schedule Announced for Nike Friendlies U.S. Soccer Announces Third Annual Nike Friendlies |

| U.S. Soccer’s Nike Friendlies is an annual youth soccer competition in which the best youth soccer clubs in United States are invited to the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., to play high-level games against like competition in a competitive environment that stresses quality soccer and player development over wins and losses. Each team plays four 80-minute games across the four-day competition and no tournament standings are kept. |

| The IMG Academy is a 190-acre campus in Bradenton, Fla., located 45 miles south of Tampa and just 15 miles north of Sarasota on Florida’s west coast. There are seven fields that will be used for the games. |

| A record 43 teams from some of the top clubs around the country, including youth national teams from the U.S. and Brazil. |

Coaches |
| |
| A free, three-day Coaching Symposium will be held as a part of this event. The event is open to all coaches. Presenters include U.S. Soccer Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach and U.S. Soccer Soccer’s Director of Youth Development John Ellinger and U.S. Soccer’s Director of Advanced & International Referee Development Esse Baharmast, as well as U.S. National Staff Coaches and Ellinger’s staff, will be among the instructors. Referees |

| U.S. Soccer also conducts a Premier Referee Academy at the Nike Friendlies, inviting 15 of the nation’s most promising referees to officiate some of the country’s most promising players. The Premier Referee Academy is a chance for referees to be evaluated and to learn what it takes to advance and to work at the game’s highest levels. A select number of the referees who worked at the Nike Friendlies will be asked to work the MLS Combine and from there individual officials may be invited to join U.S. Soccer’s referee pool for the professional level. After working matches during the days, the referees will receive instruction from Alfred Kleinaitis, Esse Baharmast and Paul Tamberino in the evenings. |
