Reading United AC (PDL) 3, New York Cosmos (NASL) 2
New York Cosmos ran out to an early lead when Javi Marquez penetrated the box before laying off for Kalif Alhassan who smartly finished inside the right post in the 11th minute. Reading United bounced back with a three-goal flurry before halftime. In the 38th minute, Paul Marie got on the end of a clever through ball to slot past Jimmy Maurer. Marco Micaletto gave the home side a 2-1 advantage in the 41st minute before a high press from Frantzdy Pierrot forced a turnover at the back and allowed the Reading United striker a clean path to goal to make it 3-1 in the 44th. The Cosmos went back on the front foot in the second half and pulled within a goal when Alhassan’s bullet cross found Danny Szetela, whose diving header found its way to the back of the net in the 63rd minute. Continued pressure came to no avail as Reading United closed out an impressive Cupset against the defending NASL champions, earning a Third Round date with fellow Pennsylvania side Harrisburg City Islanders.
