MLS leading-scorer Mathis got the home team on the scoreboard in the 36th minute, capitalizing on a lapse of concentration in the Munich defense. Bayern defender Michael Tarnat attempted a pass to a teammate on the back line, but Mathis was there to intercept it. In another exhibition match pitting an MLS side against a Bundesliga power, D.C. United fell 4-3 Wednesday night to Bayer Leverkusen, the fourth place finishers in the Germany's top division in the recently-completed 2000-2001 campaign. Dimitar Berbatov registered a hat trick for Leverkusen, including the game-winner in the 83rd minute. The German side will wrap up its three-game U.S. tour on Tuesday against the Columbus Crew. On Saturday, they defeated the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League, 6-4, in another high-scoring affair.
