CHICAGO (July 9, 2013) – U.S. Soccer today honors 33 players in the Under-17/18 Academy Starting XI for all three conferences as part of its 2012-13 Development Academy End of Year awards.
The East Conference U-17/18 XI includes Weston FC forward Nicholas Pappacena who scored 28 regular-season goals and helped his squad to a Southeast Division title. Albertson SC, Georgia United and the New York Red Bulls each have two players on the East Starting XI – Albertson defender Dylan Greenberg and forward Miguel Polley; Georgia United goalkeeper Marius Heislitz and midfielder Daniel Johnson; and Red Bulls defender Matt Miazga and forward Alex Muyl.
The Central Conference XI features a trio of FC Dallas players. Forward Bobby Edet, midfielder Kellyn Acosta and defender Kris Reaves helped FC Dallas win the Central Conference. Acosta and Edet were also part of the FC Dallas team that won the U-17/18 Academy crown in 2012.
In the West Conference XI, three LA Galaxy players were represented in midfielders Drew Murphy and Raul Mendiola and defender Oscar Sorto. The LA Galaxy won the Southwest Division with a 20-7-4 record.
The Academy XI incorporates the 11 players among each conference who represent the Academy principles of dedication, effort and integrity. The starting XI includes one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards.
Development Academy players and coaches have received postseason recognition since the Academy’s inaugural 2007-08 season, and the End of Year awards are voted upon by U.S. Soccer Technical Advisors.
