CHICAGO (June 19, 2012) – CONCACAF confirmed Monday that former U.S. Men’s National Team player Andy Mate passed away on May 13 in his native Hungary at the age of 72.
Mate made one appearance with the U.S. MNT, earning his only cap on May 27, 1964, during a loss to England.
Mate became the first American to net a hat trick on Mexican soil when he scored all three of New York Hungaria SC’s goals in a 3-2 victory against CD Oro on March 18, 1963. It also marked the first win by a U.S. club over a Mexican side in a CONCACAF event – the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup.
