CARSON, Calif. (Feb. 7, 2014) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team defeated New Zealand 2-0 in its second match of the 2014 Women’s NTC Invitational, getting a goal in each half from Mallory Pugh and Zoe Redei, respectively.
The USA’s victory, combined with Japan’s 0-0 draw with China in the first match of the day, sets up the Americans for a chance to win the tournament with a win or draw against Japan on Sunday, Feb. 9. The match kicks off at 4 p.m. PT at Glenn “Mooch” Myernick Field at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif. The first match featuring New Zealand and China kicks off at 1 p.m. PT.
The USA is currently in first place in the four-team tournament with six points and a plus-6 goal differential. Japan has four points from a win and a tie and a plus-5 goal differential. China has one point from a draw and a loss while New Zealand has lost both matches so far.
The USA opened the scoring in the 26th minute, as Pugh scored her third goal of the tournament and 14th of her U-17 international career. Midfielder Dorian Bailey played the ball from the left wing into the penalty area for midfielder Taylor Racioppi, who then found Pugh for a right-footed drive into the upper left corner.
The USA, which out-shot New Zealand 12-1 and did not allow a shot on goal, got the clincher in the 70th minute after 61st minute substitute Michelle Xiao won the ball from a Kiwi about 30 yards from the goal. She dribbled forward before slipping a pass to Redei who scored from inside the penalty area.
This will be the last event for the U-17 players born in 1997 and 1998, as they will then transition to the U-18s and U-20s. Players born in 1999 will then become the primary age group for the U-17s and begin preparations for qualifying for the 2016 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
