U.S. U-23 WNT Falls to Norway on Last Minute Goal
June 18, 2011
BORLANGE, Sweden (June 17, 2011) – The U.S. Under-23 Women’s National Team fell to Norway 3-2 in its first match of a mini-tournament that also includes host Sweden, giving up goal in the final minute after battling back from two goals down. The USA out-shot Norway 19-5 but the Norwegians put three of their five shots away.
Norway’s Tina Algroy tallied just three minutes into the game, getting behind the U.S. defense to slot home past U.S. goalkeeper Adrianna Franch.
Norway doubled its lead in the 41st minute after the USA turned a ball over in its defensive third. Franch came out to make the stop at the top of the penalty box, but the ball bounced back to Julie Adsero who chipped the stranded U.S. ‘keeper.
The USA mounted its comeback in the 52nd minute off a short corner kick from the right side. Kristie Mewis played the ball to Camille Levin, who crossed into the penalty area for Amber Brooks to head home.
The USA tied the game in the 76th minute after Casey Short beat her defender on the right side with a nice inside cut, then played a through ball to forward Sarah Hagen who was making a diagonal run to the six-yard box. Hagen finished first time for her fourth goal of the year.
With the match seemingly headed for a draw, Norway earned an indirect free kick in the 90th minute about 35 yards from the goal on the left side. Norway struck the ball over Franch, who was caught off her line, but as the U.S. ‘keeper retreated she got her fingertips on the ball just before it flew into the net, making it a legal goal.
On June 19 the USA will play Sweden, a 5-2 loser to Norway in the first match of the competition, to finish the mini-tournament and then will play one more game against Sweden on June 21. That will end the activity for the U.S. U-23s for 2011 as the players will then start preparing for their college pre-season training camps.
