The U.S.-Costa Rica matchup takes place in the hometown of star U.S. striker Abby Wambach, the second-leading scorer in the women’s game with 143 career international goals. She scored five goals during the 2012 Olympics.
The U.S. WNT’s first post-2004 Olympic match also took place in Rochester – a 4-3 victory against Iceland on Sept. 25 at Frontier Field. Wambach dazzled her hometown fans with the game’s first two goals and assisted a Mia Hamm tally.
The match at The HDC will be a homecoming of sorts for a number of WNT players who grew up in Southern California. Among these are forwards Alex Morgan (Diamond Bar) and Amy Rodriguez (Lake Forest), midfielder Shannon Boxx (Redondo Beach) and defender Rachel Buehler (Del Mar).
The U.S. WNT plays at The Home Depot Center for the first time since a 1-0 victory against China PR on Dec. 13, 2008. The team is 9-0-0 at the home of U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center.
