  • Grew up in a soccer household as the son of a former pro soccer player.
  • Joined Atletico de Lujan, where he played until age 15.
  • Had a tryout at Boca Juniors and made the team.
  • Called in the U.S. U-17 on the eve of a camp in Argentina in October 2012.
  • One of five players on the 2015 U-20 World Cup roster that was on the USA’s 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship team (Moore, Rubin, Requejo, Caldwell), playing all three matches and scoring against Honduras.
  • Has featured prominently with Boca’s U-20 team.

Misc:

  • Son of Mariel and Diego. Brother is Alan.
  • Joel was born in Dallas, Texas when his father was playing for Major League Soccer side Dallas Burn (now FC Dallas).
  • Father played over 200 games with famed Argentina side Boca Juniors before coming to play in MLS in the inaugural 1996 season. After Dallas, he also played for the MetroStars (now NY Red Bulls) and DC United. Won the U.S. Open Cup with Dallas and MLS Cup with DC. Was a three-time MLS All-Star.
  • Joel attended a bi-lingual school growing up.
  • Also participated in taekwondo, played tennis, ran track, and claims to be unstoppable at ping pong.
  • Grew up with kids of many famous Argentina soccer players. His godfather is Carlos Navarro Montoya.
  • As a youth he would often walk out with the Boca Juniors starters as a player escort, including with Martin Palermo and Guillermo Barros Schelotto.
  • Credits all social media for allowing him to stay connected to his U.S. teammates and the interests of his age group from the U.S.
