As a versatile box-to-box midfielder with quick feet, Sebastian Lleget has positioned himself as an emerging player in the MNT player pool. He’s a native of the Bay Area, having played in his youth at Sporting Santa Clara before being spotted by West Ham United scouts at a young age.
After limited playing time with West Ham, Lletget returned stateside with the LA Galaxy in 2015, becoming a key figure for the club and leading for his ascendance with the U.S. Men’s National Team. Lletget was acquired by the New England Revolution in 2021.
MNT DEBUT
In January of 2017, Lleget received his first call-up to the senior team from then-coach Bruce Arena. He played in his first match against Serbia later that month, having made a positive impression during camp. Named to the starting XI for the MNT’s critical World Cup qualifier against Honduras that March at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Lletget came through to score the opening goal just steps away from where he began his youth career with Sporting Santa Clara.
THE SETBACK
The celebration would be brief however, as moments later, Lletget took a devastating challenge from a Honduras player and was later diagnosed with a Lisfrac injury to his foot. Out for almost 18 months, Lletget worked tirelessly towards fitness and returned to the MNT for its late November friendlies in 2018. Making his first return to Avaya Stadium the following February, things came full circle for Lletget as he scored the game-winner and assisted on the second goal in a 2-0 victory against Costa Rica.
