We talked briefly with U-17 MNT head coach Wilmer Cabrera about the 20-man roster for qualifying ... Here's what he had to say about the selection process and the upcoming tournament.
On the selection process for the qualifying roster:
"We’re going with the guys who we think are ready to participate in this tournament and to qualify. These are our top 20 players right now and we hope that they can prove themselves at this event. They have a little bit more experience and knowledge, and even a little more confidence. They know what to do, and have a very good concept of what we need as a team. We don’t want to bring players because we think they’re going to be ready, we know that if everything goes well we can bring them to different events, but this group needs to be well-prepared and the group we selected are the most ready."
On the importance of knowing what to expect in Jamaica:
"The good thing is that we have been to Montego Bay so we know what the travel, the fields, the weather, and the environment is like there. We’ll get there for this event on the same day as everyone else. We’re all going to be there two days before, but we went two week sago and played there, so we know what kind of environment we’re going to be going into."
On the team's goals for the tournament:
"We are going first to qualify. We need to qualify for the World Cup, so our first goals are to win the first three games. Then we’ll see what happens after that. It’s one game at a time."
