Nick learned tonight: If you come in the snack room during the evening hours, you may get blogged about.
Royal-Dominique Fennell plays for Stuttgarter Kickers in the German Regionalliga Süd - the fourth division. It's actually the club where current MNT head coach Jurgen Klinsmann got his start. The big center back, who goes by Nick, was flown back to his club for a game today against FC Bayern, though he didn't suit up for the match in Munich.
He arrived back in camp tonight and encountered the YNT Blog and some other staff members enjoying some late night snacks in the training room (we're not ashamed to admit it). Nick came in with roommate Andrew Wooten, and we all started talking about the connections between players here in U-23 Men's National Team training camp.
Andrew Wooten: Stopped in the Snack Room
A lot of the players hadn't met before they came into camp, at least not officially. Turns out a lot of them have actually played against each other at their club teams here in Germany. Nick told us he had played Joe Gyau before in games between Stuttgarter Kickers and Hoffenheim II, the reserve side of Hoffenheim. Andrew chimed in and told us he played against Jared Jeffrey and Terrence Boyd. Andrew plays at Kaiserslautern, Jared at Mainz, and Terrence and Borussia Dortmund; all three in the II squad.
The way it works in Germany is the Bundesliga teams have reserve teams that compete in the fourth division. The fourth division is broken up into three regional divisions, and that's where these players have met before.
We got to talking a bit more and had to ask: of the American-born players in camp, who speaks the best German?
Both Andrew and Nick agreed it was Joe Gyau and Bobby Wood, who are both pretty close to being fluent it sounds like.
