U.S. goalkeepers Tim Howard and Brad Friedel saw their FA Cup end in the semifinal stage this past weekend. Howard and Everton fell 2-1 to Liverpool, while Friedel’s Tottenham side was upended 5-1 against Chelsea.
Howard had four saves in the match, and the Toffees started off with a 1-0 lead heading into the second half. But Liverpool scored two unanswered goals, including an Andy Caroll header in the final minutes, to eliminate Everton.
Carlo Cudicini got the start ahead of Friedel during Tottenham’s semifinal defeat.
In other play involving U.S ties, Jozy Altidore scored his fourth goal in four games with a 25-yard strike that found the upper left corner of the frame, but AZ Alkmaar fell to PSV Eindhoven 3-2.
Steve Cherundolo played the full 90 minutes during Hanover’s 1-0 loss against Hamburg. Eric Lichaj also went 90 minutes for Aston Villa, but Premier League-leading Manchester United had little trouble in holding down the Old Trafford fort en route to a 4-0 victory.
