The U.S. team held its first training session in Washington, D.C. this afternoon and after the dripping humidity of Miami and San Pedro Sula, the mid-60s, crisp and sunny day here in the nation's capital was certainly welcomed and refreshing. Eleven players trained on the field, including yesterday's substitutes Jozy Altidore, Steve Cherundolo and Benny Feilhaber, while the other 11 in camp hit the pool at the hotel for some regeneration. The guys who trained had some pep in their step, impressive considering the early morning arrival in D.C. The 3 v. 2s and a 5 v. 5 at the end of training were quite energetic and the full squad will train tomorrow in preparation for the big match against Costa Rica on Wednesday, a game which could give the Americans the much-coveted top spot in the Hexagonal.
Note: There are 22 players in camp and it will stay that way. U.S. midfielder Clint Dempsey, who was named to the original roster for these final two qualifying matches, will not be joining the team for the Costa Rica game. He will remain in London to rehab his injured shoulder.
