Several players on both sides of the ball were part of the most significant meeting between the two nations in international competition in the last four years: the 2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Heading into the match, the U.S. needed a victory to advance to the quarterfinal stage of the tournament. Joe Corona's goal in the 68th minute gave the United States a 3-2 lead, only to see El Salvador forward Jaime Alas score in the fourth-minute of second-half stoppage time. The 3-3 draw eliminated the USA from the tournament and a chance at playing in the Olympic Games.
