GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (Feb. 22, 2005) - The U.S. Under-17 '88 Men's National Team defeated the Municipal reserves (Under-20) 6-1 this afternoon at Trebol Stadium in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The match was the U-17s first of their weeklong Guatemala tour.
The U.S. dominated the match from the opening whistle, finding the back of the net three times in each half before Municipal was ever able to pull one back. The U.S. outshot Municipal 13-5 and midfielder Ryan Soroka led all scorers with two goals.
"We were fortunate to be up 3-0 at the half as Municipal made some mental mistakes that opened the door for us to take advantage, but overall we played quite well," said U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team head coach John Hackworth. "We put them under pressure and they really didn't have any answers for us in the second half as we were able to put away three more."
Soroka put away two of the first three goals for the U.S., knocking home the opening strike in the 19th minute on an assist from Ofori Sarkodie before finishing his next opportunity in the 37th minute after receiving a pass from Quavas Kirk, who was recently drafted by the L.A. Galaxy. In between Soroka's goals, the U.S. got a gift from Municipal as an own goal provided the eventual game-winner.
In the second half, the U.S. stayed on the attack and Kirk buried a service from Kyle Nakazawa three minutes after the whistle and then two minutes later Neven Subotic provided the fifth goal off a pass from Blake Wagner.
In the 80th minute, Amaechi Igwe closed out the scoring for the U.S. when he finished a ball from Jeremy Hall.
Two minutes later, Jean Howell pulled one back for Municipal, but moments after the goal a Municipal defender was cautioned for the second time in the match and the Guatemalan squad was reduced to 10 men for the final seven minutes.
