Academy Referee of the Week for the Week of March 1
Referee of the Week: Eugene Mednikov
Hometown: Schenectady, N.Y.
Grade: 5, National Candidate
Eugene Mednikov has been selected as the Development Academy Referee of the Week for an outstanding performance in the match between East Conference teams Albertson SC and Match Fit Chelsea on Feb. 21.
Eugene moved to eastern New York from Minsk, Belarus in 1994 and began his officiating career about 10 years later. He has since worked almost two dozen Academy matches including an appearance at the Development Academy Spring Showcase in 2009. He has also officiated USL, PDL and W-League matches in addition to the national youth tournament in 2008. As a former youth player for FC Dinamo Minsk, Eugene continues to play with amatuer teams in New York.
When asked about his professional goals, Eugene explains that he would like to become the next member of an elite group of eastern New York referees officiating in the MLS. He also works hard to mentor younger referees in his community. Eugene quickly credits his progress to the mentors he has been fortunate to have in his area. He, in return, hopes to contribute by helping another referees develop successful careers. A likely future recipient of Eugene’s mentorship is his six-month-old son Maksim, who, according to Eugene, we can expect to see officiating in the 2038 World Cup.
