U.S. Under-17s Fall to Finnish League Power MyPa, 4-1, in Bradenton, Fla.

BRADENTON, Fla. (Thursday, March 14, 2002) - The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team fell 4-1 to Finnish League powerhouse MYPA, 4-1, on Thursday at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. Guillermo Gonzalez scored for the U.S., who gave up three unanswered goals in the second half against a team that finished third in Finland last year.

Gonzalez has scored in three straight games for the U.S., who recently returned from the Mundialito Joao Havelange in Campos, Brazil, where they topped Uruguay 3-0 to finish in 5th place.

The U.S. and MyPa played a match that was much closer than the 4-1 scoreline reflected. Gonzalez equalized just before halftime after a well-played first half for both teams. The tide turned in the 49th minute, when U.S. goalkeeper Adam Hahn couldn’t handle a backpass, allowing an own goal. MyPa added two goals in the game’s final 20 minutes to seal the scoreline.

Finland's domestic league plays a similar schedule to Major League Soccer, and MyPa is in Florida wrapping up preseason training.

The U.S. Under-17s are next scheduled to face Lakeland’s Under-19 team (March 16) and the University of South Florida (March 20) before departing for the Montaigue Tournament in France at the end of the month.
