Younger U-17s Take Second Place in Pepsi International Tournament

FOREST GREEN, England (Sept. 4, 2005) - The U.S. Under-17 '89 Men's National Team finished in second place at the Pepsi International Championship in England this evening after falling 2-1 to Portugal in their thrid and final match.

The U.S. had a chance to clinch first place in the four-team round-robin tournament with a win, but two goals by Andre Carvalhas pushed the U.S. below Italy, who defeated England 2-1 in the other match, for the title.

Carvalhas gave Portugal a fantastic start when he was able to get free behind the U.S. defense and bury his shot past goalkeeper Brandyn Bumpas in the fourth minute.

The U.S. found the equalizer in the 27th minute when Sheanon Williams scored for the third straight game, finishing off a pass from Andrew Giallombardo.

The rest of the match was even, but the U.S. looked sluggish at times and Portugal broke through for the game-winner in the 70th minute on a opportunistic strike from distance. Carvalhas had the ball in midfield with his back to the goal before quickly turning and hitting a shot that rose high in the air towards goal. Bumpas tried to stop the ball as it fell towards him, but lost it in the sun and the ball got past him to the back of the net.

Despite the loss to Portugal, the U.S. once again displayed their ability to play with the rest of the world at this age group. The U.S. recently defeated South Korea and Japan to win the 6th Toyota International Football Championship in Japan last month.
