U-17 '89 MNT Draw 3-3 With Italy in Opening Match of Pepsi International

CLEVEDON TOWN, England (August 31, 2005) - The U.S. Under-17 '89 Men's National Team took a two-goal lead into halftime of their first match of the Pepsi International Championship in England, but had to find a last-minute equalizer to pull out a 3-3 draw as Italy buried three goals all in the second half.

The U.S. got off to a fantastic start as Edgar Barajas and Perica Marosevic each scored in the first eight minutes. Barajas buried a pass from Jared Jeffrey in the third minute for the first tally before Marosevic slotted home a penalty kick five minutes later.

The second half started well for the U.S. as they found chances in front of the net, but then fell apart during a eight-minute span as Italy buried three goals to take the lead. Italy forward Piergiuseppe Maritato buried the first goal in the 65th minute and the third goal in the 72nd, while Cristian Pasquato struck in the 70th.

With just moments remaining, Sheanon Williams buried a pass from Mykell Bates for the equalizer to pull out the derserved draw.

The U.S. will next face host England on Friday, Sept. 2, at Swindon Town Football Club before finishing the tournament against Portugal on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Forest Green Rovers Football Club.

With U-17 MNT head coach John Hackworth preparing the U.S. for the FIFA U-17 World Championship, assistants Raul Diaz Arce and Brian Maisonneuve will direct the 18-player team during the tournament. The U-17 '89s will be looking for their second title in a month as they just returned from Japan where they won the Sixth Toyota International Football Tournament, defeating Japan 2-1 in the final.
