U.S. U-20 Women Finish La Manga Tournament with 2-0 Loss to Germany

La Manga, SPAIN (March 13, 2009) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team finished up its three game competition at the 10 Nations Tournament with a 2-0 loss to Germany. The U.S. team also defeated Norway 3-2 and tied France 1-1. These were the first international matches of the year for the U-20s, who are in the early stages or preparations for the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.

The U.S. team fell victim to a pair of goals from German star Dzsenifer Marozsan, who won the Silver Ball and the Golden Boot at the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand. The first German goal in the 69th minute came off a giveaway in the back by the U.S. team. Germany scored its second goal nine minutes later to seal the match.

“Of course we are disappointed we gave up two goals but we certainly created some good chances and actually had our best possession in this match out of the three,” said U.S. head coach Jillian Ellis. “It was so valuable to see players come into this game and deal with the challenges of playing Germany. The focus is on seeing players perform in this type of environment so getting everyone some playing time was the priority for this event. “

The U.S. U-20 WNT will get together next for a training camp in late April at The Home Depot Center.
