CARSON, Calif. (July 16, 2009) – In the third place match for the U-17/18 age group between IMG Soccer Academy and Real Colorado, 90 minutes weren't enough to decide a victor. Playing through two overtimes, it took an Andres Acevedo strike in the 104th minute to give IMG the bronze medals with a 1-0 score line.
Both keepers came prepared to play today, as several chances by both teams were stifled seemingly at the last second. Real Colorado got the first good chance of the game by sending a through ball down the middle for Zac Portillos. Rushing off his line, IMG goalkeeper Larry Jackson smothered the pass to end the attack.
In the 48th minute, IMG played quick passes between Tyler Currence and Jon Eckford, with Eckford sending in a cross for a wide-open Alex Walters. Rising to reach the ball, the midfielder couldn’t put it on frame, keeping the score 0-0.
Colorado’s best shot of the day came in the 52nd minute, as an attack up the left side resulted in a ball passed across the box to an onrushing Tayler Kemp. Winding up, Kemp fired a shot seemingly destined for the far post, but Jackson stretched out and blocked the blast with his chest and the rebound was cleared.
Conversely, IMG’s best shot came 22 minutes later when Miguel Medina wound up from 25 yards out and put a shot towards the upper right 90. Diving up and to his left. Colorado ‘keeper Bobby Thalman proved himself equal to the task to keep his team in the game.
With both teams posting shutouts through 90 minutes, it was left to two thirty minute overtime periods to decide a winner. If still tied after 120 minutes, the match would be decided by penalties.
Overtime started slowly as both teams played cautiously, afraid to make a game-changing mistake. IMG started putting pressure up top, eventually succeeding in causing chaos in the 103rd minute with three shots in the box, all blocked by defenders. Though the ball was eventually cleared, Real Colorado was soon in trouble again.
In the 104th minute, the IMG attack swung the ball around from right to left, where Fernando Mares took it down the sideline. Beating his defender to the endline, Mares crossed the ball, finding a wide-open Acevedo, who volleyed the ball straight down the middle of the goal. With the power on the shot, Thalman was powerless to stop it.
Despite vainly trying to get the tying goal, exhaustion was clearly setting in for Real Colorado as the fourth game in seven days took its toll. Dribbling to the corner, IMG was able to close out the game and earn third place for the 2008-09 Development Academy season.
