Century Club: Maurice Edu Reaches 100 Games For Rangers

Maurice Edu reached a huge milestone with Rangers this past weekend, appearing in his 100th game for the three-time defending Scottish champions. Funny thing is, he didn’t even know it until the match was over.

“To be honest, I didn’t realize it until after the game, and then a couple people mentioned it to me and congratulated me on it,” Edu said about the century surprise.

Edu went the distance in the 3-1 win against Dundee United, and along with Carlos Bocanegra and Alejandro Bedoya, helped reinforce Rangers’ spot at the top of the league.

“Going into the game, I was just approaching it like any other game,” said Edu. “Looking back on it now, it’s a good achievement. It was good to get a win in that game, too. It’s been a good run there so far, and I’ve enjoyed my time in Glasgow. To reach that landmark is a good accomplishment, and hopefully I can get some more games under my belt for the club.”

Edu has been with Rangers since Aug. 16, 2008, when the club signed him from Toronto FC. Edu had spent a season and a half in Canada, where he won Rookie of the Year honors in the 2007 season. Since he moved across the Atlantic Ocean, the box-to-box midfielder has scored two goals in each of his four seasons and has won three consecutive Scottish Premier League titles with Rangers. With 12 points separating ‘Gers from second-place Celtic, the Scottish champions look well on their way to a fourth title in as many years.

Of his 100 appearances for Rangers, Edu said there are two that he remembers as his favorites.

“Obviously the Old Firm game (against crosstown rivals Celtic), where I scored at the end of the game and we won 1-0, that one will always stand out in my mind.”

“Going to Old Trafford and playing there in the Champions League was unbelievable,” said the California native. “I’ve had a lot of special moments, but I think probably those two are the ones that stand out the most thus far.”

Nice work, Maurice, and congratulations on the achievement. Now onto the Double Century Club?
