Mia Hamm -- A Chronology of a World Record

CHICAGO (Dec. 7, 2004) -  U.S. Women’s National Team forward Mia Hamm is far and away the leading scorer in the history of international soccer.  While Mia Hamm’s impact on the game of soccer will be felt far beyond the stats page, as she has inspired countless young girls throughout her career and played a major role in promoting women’s sports in so many ways in so many places, she will leave behind some startling numbers as well.

Currently at 274 caps, Hamm is the second most-capped player in the history of soccer, men or women.  She is U.S. Soccer's all-time leading scorer with 158 goals and 142 career assists (by far a team record) for 458 points.  Hamm’s 158 goals are so far ahead of the next best scorer (Elisabetta Vignotto of Italy with 107), that it is the equivalent of Hank Aaron being more than 225 home runs ahead of the next best slugger.

Hamm broke Vignotto’s record on May 22, 1999, scoring in a 3-0 win over Brazil in Orlando, Fla.

Hamm was the youngest person ever to play for the U.S. National Team when she debuted for the USA in 1987 at the age of 15 Years, 140 days.  Since then, she has compiled amazing scoring statistics while leaving a vast array of defenders and goalkeepers in her wake, as she treated fans in the United States and around the world to her slashing and dynamic attacking style.

Hamm did not score her first international goal until her 17th international match, but since then, has scored in 15 countries against 31 different national teams.  The USA has compiled a record of 97-3-4 in matches in which Hamm has scored.  She has one match left in her brilliant career, which has seen her take no pity on Canada or Brazil, scoring 13 times against each country, the most goals against an individual nation.

Following is an 18-year statistical breakdown of the making of a soccer legend.
