U.S. Under-16 Men's National Team Defeats Yahara United 4-1, Go Undefeated at Dallas Cup
Apr 16, 2003
The U.S. was eliminated from the quarterfinals after the Texans beat Palo Alto Gold Crew 2-0, directly after the U.S. played Yahara. The U.S. tied the Texans 3-3 in their first game of the tournament on Monday, April 14.
“The guys played really well during the tournament and came away with two quality wins and a hard-fought tie,” head coach John Ellinger said. “Even though we weren’t able to move on, the players should be proud of how they played in an older age group.”
Going into the game against Yahara, the U.S. knew they would probably need a big win to advance onto the quarterfinals and put the pressure on early. But, it was Yahara who struck first, scoring on their first shot on goal off a free kick in the 14th minute. Midfielder Brandon Armstrong headed in the free kick from Tenzin Rampa to give Yahara the early 1-0 lead.
The U.S. was able to get the equalizer in the 17th minute as Steve Curfman took a short pass from Tomiwa Ogunsola, dribbled into space and blasted a left-footed shot past the Yahara keeper. Three minutes later, Ogunsola made it 2-1 with a goal of his own off a pass from Michael Bradley that sprung him down the left wing for a one-on-one with the keeper. The keeper got a hand on Ogunsola’s first shot, but wasn’t able to bring it in and Ogunsola knocked home his second opportunity.
Right before the end of the half, the U.S. struck again as Curfman buried his second goal of the game off a through ball from midfielder Brian Mascarenhas.
The second half started well for the U.S. as Ogunsola found the back of the net again in the 50th minute. Mascarenhas beat his man on the left wing and crossed the ball in to Ogunsola, who was waiting at the back post. Ogunsola faked the shot with his right, pulling the ball behind him to his left and blasting the left-footer past the keeper.
The U.S. peppered Yahara’s goal the rest of the 40 minutes, but were unable to get the number of goals they needed to increase their goal differential. Ogunsola and Mascarenhas kept the Yahara defense on their toes with quick runs up the wings for dangerous crosses. During the half, Dax McCarty hit the right post after dribbling through a crowd of defenders and Curfman had two good chances that were knocked away by Yahara’s keeper.
