Wynalda, Meola Added to U.S. Roster as Training Camp Begins Saturday in Orlando

CHICAGO (Tuesday, January 5, 1999) - Forward Eric Wynalda and goalkeeper Tony Meola have been added to the U.S. National Team roster for the training camp set to run from Jan. 9-19 in Orlando, Fla. Following the 11-day camp, U.S. National Team head coach Bruce Arena will select an 18-player travel roster for the USA's full-international match versus Bolivia on Jan. 24 in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

Wynalda, the USA's all-time leading goal scorer with 32 goals, was absent from the November '98 camp in San Jose as Arena experimented with a younger, less-experienced squad. The 29-year-old forward returns to the national team having played 101 international matches for the United States.

"We all know that Eric has a tremendous amount of talent," said Arena. "He plays a position that I have concerns about, so it only makes sense to bring him in and see how he looks."

It has been more than four years since Meola has played for the national team, but since his last appearance against Brazil in the 1994 World Cup, he has established himself as one of the premier goalkeepers in Major League Soccer. After three seasons, Meola is the all-time league leader in shutouts (16) while starting 90 of 96 matches for the MetroStars.

"Tony has demonstrated that he's a top player in MLS and he deserves another opportunity with the national team," said Arena. "But like every other player being called in, he will have to prove himself to the coaching staff."

In addition to being the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. during the 1990 and '94 World Cups, Meola served as team captain in '94. He has registered a 1.17 goals against average in 87 international appearances.

A total of 28 players have been called in for the first training camp of the year. Starting on Saturday (Jan. 9), the national team will train at the University of Central Florida soccer fields.

The National Team will have a busy schedule in the early part of 1999, with confirmed matches against Bolivia (Jan. 24 in Santa Cruz), Germany (Feb. 6 in Jacksonville, Fla.) and Chile (Feb. 21 in Ft. Lauderdale).
