The U.S. Under-17 ‘87s Men’s National Team tied UCLA this afternoon during a scrimmage at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center at The Home Depot in Carson, Calif. The U-17s, based in Residency in Bradenton, Fla., are in the middle of a week-long training camp at the NTC, which ends on Saturday, Feb. 7. The U.S. will finish the camp with another scrimmage against the L.A. Galaxy on Friday, Feb. 6.
The match was fast paced as five of the six goals in the game were scored in the first half, including four goals in an eight-minute span near the end of the first period. Former U-17 MNT and U-20 MNT player Jordan Harvey lead the Bruins with two goals, but it was current U-17 MNT defender Tim Ward who paced the U.S. assisting on one goal and scoring on a free kick in the 88th minute to keep the ‘87s undefeated in 2004 at 3-0-0.
Harvey and the Bruins struck first in the 23rd minute, volleying home a low cross from teammate Chad Barrett, who was recently called up in January to the U.S. U-20 MNT for their first training camp of the year.
In the 35th minute, U.S. midfielder Danny Szetela slotted home a penalty kick for the ‘87s to bring the game even. The U.S. won the penalty after Rodrigo Hidalgo was taken down in the box by defender Mike Enfield.
Three more goals were scored before the end of the half, with the first coming off the head of Evan Corey in the 40th minute.
The Bruins lead didn’t last long though, as Hidalgo found the back of the net two minutes later, collecting a through ball from Ward and calmly pushing it past the Bruins’ goalkeeper, Nate Pena.
A minute later, UCLA took the lead one last time as Harvey tallied his second goal after Corey enticed U.S. goalkeeper Matt Walker out of the goal before slotting it to Harvey for the easy open-net finish.
With full-team substitutions for both teams to start the half, the action slowed a bit until the final minutes. Ward, who came back into the game for the injured Eder Robles in the 63rd minute, finished a free kick from 25-yards out. The defender’s curling upper-90 shot was his first goal with the U-17s since joining the Residency in Sept. 2002.
All three U.S. goalkeepers played in the match as Marcus Rein played the first 30 minutes (0-30), Matt Walker played the second thirty minutes (30-60) and Stephen Sandbo played the last 30 minutes (60-90).
