USA to Participate in First-Ever Women's Gold Cup; U.S. Women will Play in Hershey, Pa., Boston and Louisville, Ky.

CHICAGO (Thursday, April 13, 2000) - The Women's World Cup champion U.S. Women's National Team will be one of eight countries participating in the inaugural Women's Gold Cup, that will be held in three U.S. cities from June 23 to July 3, 2000.

The tournament will feature the top three finishers at the 1999 Women's World Cup as runner-up China and third-place winners Brazil come to the USA as guest teams. Rounding out the field will be Mexico and Canada, both of which participated in USA '99, as well as Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago and Guatemala, making six teams from the Confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean of Association Football (CONCACAF). The tournament may feature the first meeting between the USA and China since the historic Women's World Cup Final on July 10, 1999. It will feature the first meeting between the USA and Brazil since the semifinal clash of the Women's World Cup, a 2-0 victory for the Americans.

This will be the first continental championship held for women in CONCACAF outside of the three qualifying tournaments that were staged for Women's World Cups in 1991, '95 and '99. This first-ever Women's Gold Cup will consist of two groups of four teams each, with the top two in each group advancing to the semifinals. Participating in Group A will be USA, Brazil, Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago. Group B will feature Canada, China, Guatemala and Mexico.

Three sites have been chosen to host matches with each date featuring doubleheaders. Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, Pa. will host games on Friday, June 23 and Monday, June 26. Foxboro Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., host to five games of the 1999 Women's World Cup, will host Women's Gold Cup matches on Saturday, June 24, Tuesday, June 27 and the medal games on Monday, July 3. Papa John's Cardinal Stadium in Louisville, Ky. will feature matches on Sunday June 25, Wednesday, June 28, and the semifinals on Saturday, July 1.
