SHOOTING FOR FIRST: The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team earned a hard-fought, 1-0, win against Mexico in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship to book a spot at the 2008 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup. But the tournament isn’t over yet, and the team will face Costa Rica at 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 27, at Marvin Lee Stadium for the 2008 CONCACAF Under-17 Women’s Championship title. FAMILIAR FOE: The U.S. has faced Costa Rica before, going head to head against the Ticas in their first Group A match of the tournament. In that match, the U.S. won, 6-0, behind goals from Samantha Mewis (2), Courtney Verloo (2), Julia Roberts and Victoria DiMartino. The Costa Rican squad made it to the finals after coming in second place in Group A based on goal difference, finishing tied in points at four with hosts Trinidad & Tobago. In the semifinals, the Ticas defeated the heavy favorite, Canada, 2-0, with second-half goals from Katherine Alvarado and Fabiola Sanchez.

SEE YOU IN NEW ZEALAND: The third place team in CONCACAF will join the United States and Costa Rica in New Zealand. CONCACAF is the final region to qualify for the first-ever FIFA Under-17 after Ghana and Nigeria qualified from Africa (CAF) earlier in July. The CONCACAF champion will be placed into Group C with Japan, France and Paraguay. A draw will be held to determine which team will be named CONCACAF A and CONCACAF B, and which team will be named CAF A and CAF B. Team A from CONCACAF will be placed in Group A along with Colombia, Denmark and hosts New Zealand. Team B will join Germany, North Korea and a team from Africa in Group B.

Join the U.S. U-17 WNT as they travel to Maracas Beach, eat shark and take their team photo before they go up for the championship against Costa Rica on Sunday.

THE OTHER CHAMPIONSHIP: Goalkeepers Alexa Gaul and Taylor Vancil are not only teammates on the U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team, they are also teammates on the Eclipse Select squad that is competing at the USYSA National Championships. While they take on Costa Rica on Sunday, July 27, their club team will be facing the Under-17 Dallas Texans for the USYSA Under-17 National Championship. Coincidentally, the Dallas Texans is the team that U.S. U-17 WNT teammate Alexis Harris plays for. Eclipse Select started off the tournament with a 1-0 loss to FC Buck Vipers on Wednesday, July 23, but came back to beat the Dallas Texans Red, 2-1, one day later. On Friday, July 25, Eclipse Select won, 3-1, against Slammers FC to earn a spot in the finals.
