Quote Sheet -- U.S. U-20s vs. Panama

Head Coach Sigi Schmid

On the match…
“Now it’s in the bag. It wasn’t in the bag on Wednesday, but it’s in the bag now. I’m very proud of our team. I think we ran into a team. We ran into a team that was very well organized that played very defensive, so it took us awhile to break them down. We made an intelligent, quick play on the throw-in that drew the penalty. Once we had that goal things opened up and we could have had three or four at that point.”

On why it appeared the U.S. was struggling in the first half…
“It was just Panama playing very deep and very conservative. They put numbers behind the ball that made it very difficult to play and our ball movement wasn’t fast enough, wasn’t sharp enough to get behind. That’s what we talked about at halftime, that we had to be sharper and quicker. We had to use every time there was an advantage and play quickly when we could, and that’s eventually what got us the penalty.”

On the next match against Costa Rica…
“We’re happy because we qualified for the world championship, that was our goal. And in the next game now it is an opportunity for us to play some players that haven’t played as many minutes so far in the tournament. We have some very talented players that haven’t gotten on the field yet.”

On Marvell Wynne…
“I thought Marvell was tremendous because one of Panama’s outstanding players was (Luis Gallardo) and I think Marvell shut him down. I didn’t think he did very much against Marvell. He’s just a man defensively. He does a great job.”

On Benny Feilhaber…
“Benny was another one I thought had an excellent game. (Armando) Gun is a very good attacking, outside back who gets forward and he really didn’t have much impact today.”

Will John

On the foul in the box that led to the penalty kick…
“It was a good sequence between us two. I looked up and saw there was no one marking me. They fell asleep a little bit. Chad threw it in and a took a couple touches before the kid decided to go for the ball and ended up getting me.”

Marvell Wynne

On the rough first half…
“They came out strong, so we had to come out stronger. They tried to push me around a little bit, I had to push back.”

On how the second half was much better…
“It took us awhile to get our composure, but all of a sudden we figured out how they play and how to neutralize their play. We just attacked then and did well.”

On what head coach Sigi Schmid said to the team at halftime…
“He told us a few things, but pretty much we were doing what we had to do, we just needed to do it more clean. After that, it just opened up.”

On advancing to Holland…
“It means a lot. This was a very important game to us. If we want to book our ticket, I’d rather do it tonight than wait until Sunday. We got it done and we’re going to Holland.”

Freddy Adu

On advancing to the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship…
“It’s a great feeling. It’s not every day you get to play in a world cup. It doesn’t matter if its with the U-17s or U-20s, whatever. Whenever you get the chance to play in a world cup it is something special. Hopefully, we can do better than we did with the U-17s this time.”

On making four penalty kicks in five international matches…
“It’s just a matter of who wants to step up. When I step up to take a PK, I don’t care. Especially since I’ve been through it with D.C. (United), taking a PK in a conference final, so that gives you a lot of confidence to take PKs. You just step up, pick your spot and prove it.”
