U.S. U-23s Top D.C. United to Round Out Training Camp

BRADENTON, Fla. (Feb. 2, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-23 Men's National Team topped D.C. United on Saturday, 2-0, in a scrimmage to round out a week-long training camp at IMG Academy under head coach Peter Nowak.

Jozy Altidore scored in the first half and Charlie Davies added one in the second for the final score, in a game which the U.S. carried possession and had the run of play throughout much of the game.

In the ninth minute, Dax McCarty played a ball wide for Arturo Alvarez, who ran onto it and laid a ball across the box for Stuart Holden. Holden hit a low driven ball in front of the goal and Altidore was able to fire it home from close range.

The second goal of the game came in the 80th minute when Robbie Rogers carried the ball down the wing and hit a shot that was blocked by a defender. The ball ended up at the feet of Adam Cristman, who laid it off for Charlie Davies at the corner of the box. Davies beat a defender one-on-one and fired a shot from a tough angle that beat the D.C. goalkeeper to the near post.

The U-23s will take a break from training until the lead-up to the CONCACAF Olympic Qualification. The U.S. plays in the late game in each of the three doubleheaders at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa (tickets), playing Cuba at 8 p.m. ET on March 11, Panama at 8 p.m. ET on March 13 and finishing the round-robin tournament against Honduras on at 7 p.m. ET Saturday, March 15.

Group B, which will begin on March 12, features Canada, Guatemala, Haiti and Mexico, and will be played at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
