U.S. Under-17 '88 MNT Finish in Eighth Place at Montaigu Tournament

MONTAIGU, France (April 12, 2004) - The U.S. Under-17 '88 Men's National Team finished in eighth place at the Montaigu Tournament in Montaigu, France after falling to Cameroon 2-0 this afternoon. The 80-minute match was tied 0-0 with five minutes remaining until the Indomitable Lions scored twice to put the game away.

In a tight match, Cameroon was able to break the tie off a free kick from the right side of the penalty area in the 75th minute. A Cameroon midfielder served in a ball to the back post finding a teammate, who was able to get free of his marker and head it into the back of the net.

With the U.S. pushing forward in the final minutes to find the equalizer, Cameroon was able to make it a two-goal deficit after putting another past 'keeper Bryant Rueckner off a counter attack.

"While it was not the best outcome we could have hoped for, I think the players now have a better understanding of what it takes to be successful at the youth international level," said Under-17 '88 head coach John Ellinger. "At times we played some great soccer, but we still lack the mental awareness to play well consistently for an entire match. As we move forward, I think that is something that will improve."

At the conclusion of the tournament, the U.S. was awarded the Fair Play Award.
