MILWAUKEE (July 12, 2011) – PA Classics and Real Salt Lake AZ played to an exciting draw in the second group match for both teams at Development Academy Finals Week. Both teams were forced to come from behind in the game, which ended with PA Classics on four points and a share of the Group 2 lead.
PA Classics will play North Carolina Fusion on Thursday, with the winner advancing to the championship game. If the two teams draw, Real Salt Lake has a chance to advance with a win against CASL Chelsea FC Academy and a favorable result in the PA Classics-NC Fusion game (Full scenarios). Both Group 2 matches kick off Thurs., July 14 at 6 p.m. CT.
Both teams began the game with a lot of energy, with Real Salt Lake AZ settling into their passing game and PA Classics putting on high pressure to break it up. Early on, PA Classics were dependent on their counterattack, but settled into an offensive rhythm of their own.
In the 16th minute, a good buildup from PA Classics sent Zach Herstek toward the endline, where he hit a driven ball across the face of the goal and into the path of Christian Kaschak who was on a dead sprint. Kaschak’s first-time shot was wide of the far post. In the 30th minute, Herstek found himself rushing in on a near breakaway against RSL goalkeeper Joey Speshock, but defender Jon Zabasajja did well to recover and force a shot straight at Speshock.
In the third minute of added time in the first half, PA Classics broke through for the game’s first goal. After high pressure forced a takeaway, the ball was slipped over to Connor Maloney’s feet. He took a touch into the box and hit a low shot that landed just inside the far post mere seconds before the halftime whistle.
Real Salt Lake equalized in the 52nd minute through a good buildup that led to a hard shot from Romain Gall. PA Classics goalkeeper Brent Arnold was able to knock the shot down, but gave up a big rebound that Ben Spencer was able to pounce on and finish into a virtually empty net for his second goal at Finals Week.
Ten minutes later, Real Salt Lake’s Brian Bates ran onto a long diagonal ball and played it back across the middle. Danny Gavin, who entered the game just minutes before, finished it to give Real Salt Lake a 2-1 advantage.
Seven minutes after falling behind, PA Classics battled back. Attacking with everything they had, the ball went wide to Maloney, who played in a cross that Kyle Bitterman coolly finished at the back post to make it a 2-2 game. Though the two teams pressed for the win, the final chances of the game left both wanting.
