FC DELCO and New York Red Bulls Draw In Giants Stadium; Real Colorado and Colorado Rush Scoreless in the Snow

CHICAGO (April 29, 2008) -- The U-15/16 team from FC DELCO got to play where their MLS heroes play on Sunday, taking on the youth squad of the New York Red Bulls in Giants Stadium before the professional team squared off against the San Jose Earthquakes.

After dressing and preparing for the game inside the locker rooms, both teams started the game nervously in their surroundings but settled into the game quickly. The Red Bulls controlled the the majority of the game by holding steady possession in the midfield, but took just four shots in the first half, largely due to the solid back line of DELCO, which includes co-captain Andrew O’Malley.

In the 28th minute, team co-captain Bob Sutcliffe played a slotted ball through a pair of defenders that was run onto by Mike Lowe. Lowe turned with the ball quickly and hit a low shot that put his team on the board first.

The Red Bulls came out of the locker room looking to even the score and were able to get through DELCO’s back line to take 12 shots in the second half. The Red Bull pressure finally paid off in the 76th minute, when a loose ball in the box was cleared right to Samuel Adjei. Adjei took the ball off his chest and fired a half volley into the far post that beat DELCO ‘keeper Bobby Rosato for the 1-1 final.

After the game, both teams took advantage of the opportunity to watch DELCO alumnus Jeff Parke and the MLS' Red Bulls defeat San Jose on the same field.

Next up for FC DELCO is a trip to the Northeast Conference, where they will take on FC Greater Boston on Saturday, May 3 and Seacoast United on Sunday, May 4. The Red Bulls will battle the BW Gottschee on May 3 and Albertson on May 4 in non-conference action.

On Saturday, in what Colorado Rush head coach Eric Bushey called “typical Colorado weather,” the Rush drew with Real Colorado, 0-0, in a game where the first half was filled with snow and wind and the second half was sunny and 60 degrees.

Both teams struggled to possess the ball or build up an attack in the snow, and after losing Connor Talbert to injury just two minutes into the match, Real Colorado was also without its leading scorer.

The match settled down when the skies cleared and both teams started to create dangerous chances. The Rush midfield, led by Isaac Caughran, sparked an attack that was fueled by forwards Morgan Sacco and Carlos DelPiccolo, but Real’s backline did not budge.

“We focused so hard in the first half to not give up a goal as we were going into the wind, that we were a little deflated in the second half,” said Real Colorado coach Lorne Donaldson. “However, I was happy that we were able to create dangerous chances in the adverse conditions.”

The same was true of the Rush defense, which was led in the second half by goalkeeper Issa Bissou, who was tested several times from distance, and came up with the save each time to keep the game scoreless.

“There is quite a history between the two clubs and we both played a good, competitive match.” said Bushey. “I thought our play toward the end of the first half and into the second half was solid. It wasn’t an easy contest, and I’d say the 0-0 result was probably fair in the end.”

Real Colorado moves to 9-1-4 on the season, retaining their one-point lead over the Rush for the top place in the West Conference. They will next host FC Portland on the evening of Friday, May 2 and Crossfire Premier on Sunday, May 4 in conference action. The Colorado Rush will face Crossfire Premier on Saturday, May 3 and FC Portland on Sunday, May 4 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
