U-15 BNT Advances to Quarterfinals of Copa Mexico de Naciones
Offense Fueled Again by Joe Gallardo Jr., Who Tallies Second Brace in as Many Days
MEXICO CITY (Aug. 12, 2013) – The U.S. Under-15 Boys’ National Team took first place in Group B at the 2013 Copa Mexico de Naciones, closing out the group stage with a 3-1 victory against Uruguay.
The USA finished atop the group with a 2-0-1 record, ahead of second-place Uruguay (1-1-1) and third-place Brazil (1-1-1). Uruguay ranked second based on goal differential.
The U.S. now advances to the quarterfinals on Wednesday and will Costa Rica at 10 a.m. local time. Should the USA advance to the semifinals, it would then face either Colombia or Uruguay.
For a second straight game, Joe Gallardo Jr. was the USA’s top offensive catalyst as he scored two goals and assisted a Haji Wright goal in the 68th minute. All three U.S. goals came in the second half of the 70-minute match. Gallardo tallied his first goal in the 45th minute off of an Alex Valela assist, and then notched his second brace in as many days off of an Alejandro Zendejas assist in the 62nd minute.
Gallardo has four goals in the tournament to lead the U.S. U-15s. He scored two goals during the USA’s 4-0 victory against Panama on Sunday, Aug. 11.
U.S. defender Daniel Barbir will miss Wednesday's quarterfinal match because of yellow card accumulation in the group stage.
