U.S. WNT Midfielder Megan Rapinoe Named a Finalist for Sports Illustrated's Most Inspiring Performer of 2012
CHICAGO (Nov. 21, 2012) – U.S. Women’s National Team midfielder Megan Rapinoe has been named a finalist for the Most Inspiring Performer of 2012 in Sports Illustrated’s year-end Fan’s Choice program.
Starting Wednesday evening, Nov. 21, fans will be able to go to SI’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/sportsillustrated to pick their Most Inspiring Performer of 2012 from 15 finalists which have been chosen by the SI editors. The winner will appear in a feature inside the December 17 issue of Sports Illustrated. Fans have through Wednesday, November 28 to vote.
Rapinoe has had her best year of her career so far on the field for the U.S. team, scoring six goals with 10 assists and five games still to play in 2012. Rapinoe’s two-goal performance in the semifinal of the 2012 Olympics against Canada, where she twice tied the match after the USA had gone down a goal, was one for the ages. She scored directly off a corner kick in that game and also hit a beautiful long-distance strike off the post and in.
Rapinoe spoke openly about her sexuality before the Olympics in the July issue of Out Magazine. She also recently received the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center‘s Board of Directors Award and has become a much admired figure for leadership and articulate dialogue on LGBT issues.
She currently has 63 caps and 17 career goals for the USA as the gold medalists head into the final five matches of the Fan Tribute Tour, presented by Panasonic. The USA will play Ireland in Rapinoe’s adopted hometown of Portland on Nov. 28 and in Glendale, Arizona on Dec. 1. The USA will face China three times to end the year, on Dec. 8 at Ford Field in Detroit, on Dec. 12 at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston and on Dec. 15 at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton Florida.
Tickets for the matches are available through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, at all Ticketmaster ticket centers in the areas of the matches.
