SLSG MISSOURI, NEW YORK RED BULLS CLINCH U-15/16 CHAMPIONSHIP SPOTS: St. Louis Scott Gallagher Missouri posted a perfect 3-0-0 record in group play at Academy Finals Week, earning a 1-0 victory against D.C. United on Saturday to win Group 2 by five points over second-place Crew Soccer Academy Wolves. This will be SLSG Missouri’s first trip to the Academy Finals Week championship game, a feat also achieved by their opponents, the New York Red Bulls. New York went unbeaten in Group 1 following a 3-0 victory against Charlotte Soccer Academy. This year’s U-15/16 championship match kicks off at 8 p.m. CT on July 23, and the match will be streamed live on ussoccer.com. Fans can also follow the game on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt.

FC DALLAS, VANCOUVER CONTEST U-17/18 CHAMPIONSHIP ON SUNDAY: Vancouver Whitecaps FC and 2011 U-17/18 Development Academy runner-up FC Dallas meet for the U-17/18 Academy Finals Week championship at 8 p.m. CT on Sunday, July 22, at BBVA Compass Stadium. The match will be streamed live on ussoccer.com, with updates on Twitter @ussoccer_ynt. Sunday’s schedule also consists of three placement matches at the Houston Amateur Sports Park, including the group runners-up North Carolina Fusion and Solar Chelsea SC playing for third place at 5 p.m. CT at the Houston Amateur Sports Park. Earlier on Sunday, Baltimore Bays Chelsea defeated the Colorado Rapids 4-1 in the fifth-place match and De Anza Force defeated Chivas USA 5-0 in the seventh-place match.

U.S. SOCCER TECHNICAL ADVISORS PLAY CRITICAL ROLE AT DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY FINALS WEEK: The amount of match preparation work for teams at the 2011-12 Development Academy Finals Week has reached a new level thanks to the work of the nine U.S. Soccer Technical Advisors in Houston. From video analysis to education and evaluation, the 16 entrants in Finals Week are being exposed to the variety of tools and information utilized by the U.S. National Teams. Read the full story.

IN THE ACADEMY: PLAYING UP - In the first episode of ussoccer.com’s “In the Academy,” players and coaches discuss the concept of “Playing Up,” where young players can challenge themselves by playing up in older age groups and set themselves up for more success as they look to build their careers. U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann speaks about how “Playing Up” can benefit a young player, while coaches and players in the Development Academy talk about the benefits they have seen on the field. DYNAMO DEFENDER SARKODIE IMPARTS PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE: Houston Dynamo defender Kofi Sarkodie spoke to players from the U-17/18 age group on Thursday. The 21-year-old Sarkodie talked about his path to becoming a professional soccer player, his time with the U-17 Residency Program in Bradenton, Fla., and subsequent trip to the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup. FIVE ACADEMY PLAYERS HIGHLIGHT U.S. U-20 MILK CUP ROSTER: Showcasing the progress in the development of a strong relationship between the U.S. Soccer Development Academy and the U.S. Youth National Teams, five Academy players earned a spot on the U.S. U-20 Men's National Team that traveled to Northern Ireland on Monday in preparation for the Milk Cup. The U.S. faces Denmark (July 21) and Turkey (July 23) before a final placement game on July 26. (The YNT Blog)
