Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final Pre-Game Quote Sheet

2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final
Columbus Crew vs. Seattle Sounders
Oct. 5, 2010 – Qwest Field, Seattle, Wash.

Robert Warzycha, Head Coach of the Columbus Crew
On the upcoming Final:
“We took the Open Cup seriously and we managed to get to the final and I think it’s a good accomplishment for this team. It’s a special tournament for us because it has Lamar Hunt’s name on it. It’s not going to be easy, but I think we have a good chance to win. We’re looking forward to a good game.”

Frankie Hejduk, Columbus Crew Defender and Captain:
On what the Open Cup Final means to the Crew:
“We haven’t won this trophy since 2002, and opportunities to win trophies, when you get to this level, come few and far between and it’s another chance for us to get some hardware. At the beginning of the year, you set your goals and this was one of them - to get to the U.S. Open Cup Final and to get a trophy. Now we have that opportunity in front of what’s going to be a big crowd and an energetic crowd. At end of the day, it’s a trophy that’s named after our (late) owner and we take some pride in that. We’re going to give it our best effort and get out there and have some fun.”

Duncan Oughton, Columbus Crew Midfielder/Defender:
On being the lone remaining active player from the 2002 Open Cup championship team:
“Obviously it’s good to be back (in the final). It’s definitely been taxing getting to this point with all of the travel and games, but here we are and it’s a credit to the guys. Last time (2002), it was at home and it was a nice feeling to win our first championship at home. Obviously it’s their home-field advantage this time. I heard it’s going to be a huge crowd, so it’s going to be a buzzing in their favor, which is going to make it tough for us, but we’ll be ready to go. It’s a title and we want to put something in the trophy cabinet so hopefully (Tuesday) night we can get that done.”

Sigi Schmidt, Head Coach of the Seattle Sounders
On his excitement level for the Final:
“There is [excitement] for me. I hope they are excited. As I have always said, it’s always special when you can do something that is unique and that’s different and can set yourself apart from the group and we have that opportunity tomorrow. Nobody has defended this title in a long time. [Having the chance] to step up and do that after a 27 or 28 year gap is something that is definitely special for our team and we look forward to it.”

On the Crew:
"He's a good coach and they're a good team. Like I said after the game in Columbus, [the final score] was not the separation of the teams. We've played them here twice over the last two years and tied both times. It's going to be a great game. It's going to be an exciting game. It's going to be a game that the fans don't want to miss, but it's also going to be a game between two good teams that are in form and that are playing well. It's great to be at home. Being at home the last week for us has been tremendous and we've got to continue to concentrate, focus, and play well. If we continue to get timely goals ... it's going to continue to keep us in the forefront."
