U.S. U-17 WNT Comes From Behind to Defeat U.S. U-16s, 2-1, at 2006 Women's Nike Friendlies

CARSON, Calif. (Sept. 29, 2006) – The U.S. Under-17 Women’s National Team scored two second-half goals to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat the U.S. Under-16 Girl’s National Team, 2-1, in the second game for both teams at the 2006 Women’s Nike Friendlies.

U-16 forward Tiffany McCarty had put her side ahead in the 30th minute, somewhat against the run of play, with an opportunistic strike from eight yards out that beat U-17 goalkeeper Wendy Balogun low into the right corner at the near post.

The U-17s kept up the pressure in the second half, eventually out-shooting their younger counterparts 14-4, and got an equalizer in the 65th minute after midfielder Courtney Barg was bundled to the ground in the penalty area. Midfielder Teresa Noyola stepped to the spot and buried her shot high into the left side of the net to tie the game.

Forward Merritt Mathias got the winning goal in the 76th minute, running onto a rolling cross from the left flank by Melissa Henderson to loop her left-footed shot over the goalkeeper and into the net from 10 yards out.

The match was intense and featured heavy tackling from both teams, who combined for 39 fouls, but the U-17s keep the U-16s from taking a shot in the second half while striking nine of their own, two of which resulted in goals.

The U.S. U-16s return to action tomorrow, facing the Real Colorado U-18s at 2 p.m. on Field Field 1 at The Home Depot Center. The U-17s will finish their tournament on Sunday, October 1, facing the U-18 Dallas Texans at 10:30 a.m. on Field 1.
