U.S. U-20 Women Tie France 1-1 in second Match at La Manga Tournament

LA MANGA, Spain (March 11, 2009) – After defeating the Norway U-20s on March 9 on the same day that the full U.S. Women’s National Team also defeated the Norwegians, the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team duplicated the feat of their elders once again, scoring a 90th-minute equalizer while the full team was doing the same 400 miles to the east in the Algarve Cup Final. While the USA lost to Sweden in penalty kicks after tying 1-1, the U-20s did not go to spot kicks during the 10 Nations Tournament with the match ending in a 1-1 draw with France.

The USA gave up a 63rd minute goal and clawed back to get the tying goal in the last minute. Midfielder Casey Short intercepted a pass in France’s defensive third on the right side of the field. She then beat two defenders to the inside moving towards the top corner of the penalty box. Two more touches took Short a yard from the top corner of the six-yard box where she slotted the ball on the ground into the far post past an on rushing French goalkeeper.

“I was very pleased with the player’s resolve today,” said U.S. head coach Jillian Ellis. “They pushed hard for the equalizer and they deserved the goal. We worked hard defensively but the quality of our passing made possession difficult today. Casey’s goal was a fantastic run and she showed great composure in the box.”

The U.S. finishes the tournament against the Germany U-20s on March 13.
