U.S. Under-20 Women Defeat Scotland Women's National Team, 2-1, at Cyprus Tournament
LARNACA, Cyprus (March 5, 2008) -- The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team won its first match on March 5 at the Cyprus Women’s Cup 2008, defeating the full Women’s National Team of Scotland by a 2-1 score.
The victory gave the USA the upper hand in Group 2 of the six-team tournament. The group winners will play for championship on March 12. The U.S. U-20s will next face Russia on March 7 in a “non-tournament” match before finishing group play against the Netherlands on March 10.
“First, I want to say that the organizing committee, which is the Scottish Federation with assistance from the Cyprus Tourism Office, has been excellent and the training and match fields are outstanding,” said U.S. head coach Tony DiCicco. “On today’s game, I am proud of our team. Once again, with 10 new players and very limited training, we did some very good things both offensively and defensively. Our first half was strong but then we relaxed somewhat in the second half and Scotland took full advantage. A late goal from Scotland made it very interesting down to the final whistle.”
The USA scored first in the 27th minute when Kelley O’Hara worked back from her forward spot to win a ball from a defender and played Nikki Washington, who fired a shot from 12 years out. Scottish goalkeeper Gemma Fay deflected the ball, but Michelle Enyeart was first to the rebound and finished first-time from nine yards away.
Five minutes later, the USA made it 2-0 after Enyeart was brought down in the penalty box and O’Hara converted the spot kick. Scotland made it interesting when they pulled one back in the 88th minute, but the USA killed the rest of the game for the victory.
“We have to learn how to put games away and also manage games down the stretch,” said DiCicco. “This tournament will help us in both areas and we are seeing different playing styles, which is always valuable. Our next match against Russia’s full team will be an excellent test.” The U.S. U-20s are currently in preparations for qualifying for the 2008 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Chile from Nov. 20-Dec. 7.
