Chivas USA’s Caleb Calvert was named the U-15/16 National Player of the Year out of the West Conference. Calvert played between the U-15/16 and U-17/18 age groups during the 2012-13 regular season and contributed a robust 22 goals in 27 games. Earlier this month, Calvert was signed by Major League Soccer’s Chivas USA as a homegrown player, becoming the youngest player in club history at 16 years, 8 months and 13 days. Abdallah Bangura of Baltimore Bays Chelsea and Abuchi Obinwa of Chicago Magic PSG were named the Development Academy’s East and Central Conference Players of the Year, respectively.

Seattle Sounders forward Jordan Morris earned U-17/18 National Player of the Year out of the West Conference. Morris has had a banner 2012-13 campaign that featured 27 goals in 28 regular-season games, and he most recently helped the Sounders advance to their first Finals Week from July 14-20 in Houston. Defender Matt Miazga of the New York Red Bulls (East Conference) and midfielder Kellyn Acosta of FC Dallas (Central Conference) also garnered U-17/18 Player of the Year in their conferences.

De Anza Force’s Shaun Tsakaris was awarded U-15/16 National Coach of the Year out of the West Conference. Tsakaris and De Anza Force won the Northwest Division and then posted a 2-0-1 record at the Academy Playoffs to qualify for this year’s Academy Finals Week. It marks De Anza Force’s second Finals Week appearance at the U-15/16 age group. Oakwood Soccer Club’s Kevin Bacher (East) and Crew Soccer Academy Wolves’ Lars Richters (Central) also garnered U-15/16 coaching honors.

Tim Carter of Shattuck-Saint Mary’s Soccer Academy is the 2012-13 U-17/18 National Coach of the Year out of the Central Conference. Carter’s squad improved dramatically throughout the season and earned a spot in this year’s Finals Week. Shattuck-Saint Mary’s was one of the Academy’s hottest teams heading into the Playoffs, posting a 9-1-2 record in the 2013 portion of its regular season. Matias Asorey of Kendall SC (East) and Zach Feldman of Real So Cal (West) also received U-17/18 coaching recognition.

Among other national honors, U.S. Soccer has awarded three Academy programs as part of the Respect Campaign, which was launched in May of 2010 to improve the level of professionalism in the Development Academy program. The 2012-13 Respect winners include PA Classics (East), Sockers FC (Central) and Pateadores (West). The Respect grade is based on a club’s disciplinary record, professionalism of staff and spectator behavior.

U.S. Soccer also recognizes the Academy teams for Style of Play in each conference. The New York Red Bulls (East), Chicago Fire (Central) and Real Salt Lake AZ (West) have been honored for their play at the U-15/16 and U-17/18 levels in 2012-13. Style of Play awards are based on technical scouting throughout the season. Teams are evaluated and graded on the following areas: offense, defense, quick transition and finishing, tactics (playing out from the back), technical, physical and psychosocial.

Development Academy players and coaches have received postseason recognition since the Academy’s inaugural 2007-08 season, and the End of Year awards are voted upon by U.S. Soccer Technical Advisors.
