U-20 WNT Defeats New Zealand 5-0 to End Training Camp in Los Angeles

CARSON, Calif. (May, 19, 2012) – The U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team finished up a training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., with a resounding 5-0 victory against the New Zealand U-20 WNT as forward Katie Stengel scored twice while Lindsay Horan, Kealia Ohai and Chioma Ubogagu also tallied.

Both the USA and the Kiwis are preparing for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup to be held in Japan from Aug. 19 to Sept. 8.

Forward Lindsey Horan, the USA’s leading scorer this year, opened her team’s account in the 14th minute with her 12th goal in all matches during 2012. Midfielder Morgan Brian played outside back Crystal Dunn down the right side and Dunn hit a perfect far-post cross that Horan headed back across the goal and into the net.

Just four minutes later it was 2-0 as left back Mollie Pathman received the ball just inside the USA’s attacking half and played a pass forward to Ohai. The speedy forward cut inside, beat two defenders, got to the corner of the six-yard box and finished low to the right post.

The USA made it 3-0 in the 35th minute as midfielder Vanessa DiBernardo received the ball just past the center circle on the left side of the field in the USA’s attacking half and slipped a through ball to Katie Stengel at the top of the 18-yard box. The powerful forward finished first time low to the right post for her first goal of the game.

Stengel tallied her second just on the other side of halftime as Horan played her down the right side wing. Stengel let the ball run into the box and onto her right foot before she struck a shot high into the near post.

The young Americans finished the scoring with four minutes remaining in the match off another DiBernardo assist. This time she played a long ball from the center of the field to the left side, finding Ubogagu in space. The crafty forward took a few touches into the box, held off her defender and finished her shot high inside the left post.

U.S. head coach Steve Swanson’s squad won the CONCACAF Qualifying tournament last March in Panama City, Panama, earning a berth to Japan where the team will join 15 other countries in a quest for the U-20 Women’s World Cup title The field includes host Japan, China PR, Korea DPR and Korea Republic from Asia, Germany, Italy, Norway and Switzerland from Europe, the USA, Canada and Mexico from CONCACAF, New Zealand from Oceania, Ghana and Nigeria from Africa, and Brazil and Argentina from South America.
