CHICAGO (Saturday, July 12, 2003) - U.S. Women’s National Team head coach April Heinrichs has named the 20-woman roster that will face Brazil tomorrow at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans, La. The match, which is the last before Heinrichs picks the 2003 U.S. Women’s World Cup Team in mid-August, will kickoff at 3 p.m. CT (4 p.m. ET) and will be televised live on ESPN.
Along with superstars like Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy and Kristine Lilly, the final roster features two players facing special milestones in defender Christie Pearce and midfielder Leslie Osbourne. If Pearce makes an appearance tomorrow, the Point Pleasant, N.J., product will become the 15th U.S. women’s player to play 100 times for her country. On the other end of the spectrum, this is the first time that the 19-year-old Osbourne is suiting up for the full WNT, meaning she would earn her very first cap if she sees time in the Brazil match.
Heinrichs and her staff, who had a total of 25 players in New Orleans, did not include defender Brandi Chastain on the final roster as a precautionary measure due to a quad strain suffered while playing for her WUSA team last week. Heinrichs also released defenders Kylie Bivens, goalkeepers Jaime Pagliarulo and LaKeysia Beene and midfielder Lori Chalupny.
It will be hot and humid for the match as temperatures are forecast for the high 80s. It will be the first meeting between the USA and Brazil since the semifinal match of the 2000 Olympics, a 1-0 U.S. victory on a goal from Mia Hamm. The world’s all-time leading scorer, Hamm heads into the match with 140 career goals.
