Derby County Wolves Clinch Spot In Title Game With 1-0 Victory

CARSON, Calif. (July 13, 2009) – In a matchup of two skilled conference rivals, the Derby County Wolves came out on top by defeating Chicago Magic AS Monaco 1-0 with a late goal from Nathan Hicklin. The win puts Derby County into the U-15/16 championship game as the winner of Group 1.

Chicago had the first good chance of the day, when in the 15th minute, Tyler Engel played a ball down the right side for forward Aaron Horton. Approaching the end line, Horton sent the ball across the face of the goal on the ground with pace, but a sliding attempt by Arturo Garza went wide to the left.

With both teams sitting back in a defensive posture, back passes filled up much of the first half. The Magic had another chance in the 38th minute when a cross from the left side found Oliver Mayer on the far post. He miss-hit his volley, and the shot was caught easily by Wolves’ goalkeeper Adam Grinwis.

A 0-0 score at the half caused both teams to approach the final 40 minutes quite aggressively, and the second half saw many more forays into each attacking end than the first. In the 62nd minute, Derby County showed promise with a well taken header by Hicklin, but the effort was saved by Jovani Castanon with a full-stretch effort to his right.

Hicklin would not be denied two minutes later however, giving them a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. With pressure coming, the Chicago defense attempted to clear the ball out of the box. It fell to the feet of first-half substitute Joshua Barens about 35 yards out to the right side. With the defense pushing out, Hicklin toed the line perfectly as Barens chipped in a pass. Receiving the pass with his front to goal, Hicklin volleyed the shot past the helpless Castanon and into the right side netting.

Chicago had one last attempt in the 70th minute, with the full team pushing for the equalizer. Tyler Engel took a corner kick that was headed around by both teams, eventually falling to the top of the box. An attempted shot was knocked down and calls of handball were heard, but no call was given.

Chicago Magic AS Monaco will attempt to close out the opening round games with a win against FC Dallas on Wednesday, July 13, while the Wolves will essentially be playing a scrimmage against the New York Red Bulls, who will be searching for their first win this week on the same date.
