U-17 U.S. vs Spain Post-Match Quote Sheet

Post-Match Quote Sheet:
Spain 2, U.S. 1
2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup
Oct. 26, 2009

U.S U-17 Men’s National Team Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera
On the result against Spain:
“"I think it was a very good match. We had to play against one of the favorite teams, and we started off with some positive things, we scored quickly. They reacted very well, they had a brilliant ten minutes and they put themselves in a good position. After that obviously our kids started to react, to put pressure on Spain and start to come back, but they (Spain) did a very good job defending. We tried to play and we created options but we didn’t score. When they had the opportunities, they were clinical with their finishing. That’s why they are at that level right now."

U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team defender LUIS GIL
On his thoughts on the match after such a promising start:
“We started well. I was proud to be playing against this team, which is one of the best in the world. It was a good game and I think we gave it all we had. Well, until the next time.”

On his expectations against Malawi:
“It’s going to be another difficult game. Each game is going to be more and more difficult because everyone is here to play.”

On what changed for the U.S. in the second half:
“We wanted to score a goal. We had to score a goal. We were attacking and attacking but the ball didn’t want to go in.”

On the team's performance tonight:
“I thought we played pretty well tonight. We got on them early and we played our game. They got two chances and put them away, and we had a lot of chances but we didn’t finish them as well as we could. They are a very good team.”

On moving forward to play Malawi and UAE:
“I think we just have to put this game behind us now. There are still two more games left and we need to focus on them and we can still get through the group.”

On his goal:
“Duran played it up and all I could do is challenge the goalkeeper, and I don’t even know if I touched it, but I turned around as quickly as I could. It was just sitting there and I touched it in.”
