U.S. U-17s Fall to Brazil 3-0 at Development Academy Winter Showcase in Lancaster, Calif.
LANCASTER, Calif. (Dec. 5, 2008) - The U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team fell 3-0 to Brazil this afternoon in the first match of the Nike International Friendlies during the Development Academy Winter Showcase at the Lancaster National Soccer Center in Lancaster, Calif. The U.S. will meet Brazil again on Sunday, with the game being televised live on Fox Soccer Channel. Kickoff for the game is at 2 p.m. PT, with a half-hour pregame show starting at 1:30 p.m. PT.
This fixture has become staple of the Nike International Friendlies in recent years, and this marked the fourth meeting in as many years between the countries. The opening exchanges, which featured physical play and tough tackling, were befitting of two sides who have played out some memorable matches in recent times.
From the restart, the U.S. went immediately on the offensive in search of the equalizer. Forward Jack McInerney found midfielder John Agudelo in space on the right wing, but he just dragged his shot wide of the Brazil goal.
Minutes later Luis Gil delivered a dangerous high ball into the area, which Brazilian goalkeeper Luis Guilherme did well to punch out of danger.
Brazil withstood the U.S. pressure, and in the 33rd minute they doubled their lead. From a dead ball, Coutinho whipped a dangerous ball towards the far post that left U.S. goalkeeper Earl Edwards in two minds. Even though it was too far for any Brazilian attackers to make contact, the placement was such that the ball nestled itself into the lower corner of the goal
The second half saw the teams exchange chances, but the U.S. was unable to penetrate the resilient Brazilian backline.
Eventually, the South Americans put the result out of reach, when Coutinho and substitute Geovane played a delightful one-two on the edge of the area. Countinho took the return pass in stride and slotted the ball home in the 84th minute for his second goal.
The teams will be back on the field Sunday, as they continue the schedule for the Nike International Friendlies. The event is part of U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase, which features 220 games across four days at the Lancaster National Soccer Center.
