1998 George F. Donnelly Cup Information * Nov. 27-29
CHICAGO (Tuesday, November 17, 1998) - The United States Amateur Soccer Association will be hosting the annual George F. Donnelly Cup this year at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., from Nov. 27-29.
The George F. Donnelly Cup is a competition that brings the winning state teams from regional competitions together to determine the overall national champion of select player competition. The states vying for the Donnelly Cup represent the best states in the country. The tournament is a four-team round-robin event, with the first-place finisher being declared champion.
The teams participating in the tournament are the winners of regional competitions that took place earlier this year. Each team consists of the top amateur players from their state. The state held trials to determine which athletes would represent them in regional competition. That competition selected players to participate in the Soccer Festival. The overall purpose of the competition is to select players, both men and women, for national amatuer teams and give them an opportunity to be seen by the USSF National Team Program.
