U.S. Women's World Cup Quotes - Oct. 6, 2003

Midfielder and Co-Captain Julie Foudy

On the loss to Germany…

"We just keep wondering what we could have done different. But, Germany was excellent. I thought they were a great team. I though they were organized and the keeper had a phenomenal game. I give them a lot of credit. My hat is off to how they played. If there’s any ray of light I look at that game and think we lost to an incredible team."

On what they did today…

"We just decided today we would be with each other and stay invisible together. Brandi (Chastain) wanted to go shopping, we didn’t want to go, but we went because it was better than sitting in your room and sulking about it. It’s hard, we’d like to rewind."

On how they played…

"One of the things I look back on is that I’m proud of the way we played. I wouldn’t look back and say we really stunk up that field or that we just had an off night. I don’t think it was one of our best games, but you know we created chances, got in the box, got shots on goal, had I don’t know how many corner kick, so we were creating things. It’s just in soccer that happens."

On the effort the team gave in the game…

"The positive is you walk away and say we left everything out there. We left our hearts on that field trying to make it work. In the last final minutes when they scored the last two goals, it was because we didn’t want to go down without a fight. I’m proud of that. It doesn’t dissipate the pain, but at least you go away knowing you gave it everything you got. "

Defender Cat Reddick

On the loss to Germany…

"You dream about what you could have done more to help the team. I was talking to Briana Scurry and she was saying the same thing. She said that sometimes she’ll dream that we’ll lose, but this time it was real. We’re still trying to pinch ourselves hoping it was a dream."

On if any one thing caused the loss in the game…

"I don’t think there was one mistake. We played incredible. We can’t sit back and think we could have done more. You’re obviously going to dream about it, but game plan wise we couldn’t have done any better besides finish. The ball just didn’t go our way and the keeper played the game of the tournament for her. You have to credit the Germans for their play. They were incredible. I don’t think we could have done more. We just needed the ball to go our way and it just didn’t."

On her experience in the Women’s World Cup…

"It’s been the best experience of my life. I’ve had so much fun with these girls, playing alongside them on the biggest stage. You see the passion in their eyes. This is their third or fourth World Cup and the passion is bigger than it ever was. I’ll never forget this for the rest of my life. I’ve had so much fun. Regardless of the result, I would never take anything away from it. It’s something I’ll be able to tell my kids some day and I’m so glad I got to experience it."

Defender Brandi Chastain

On not being able to play due to her injury…
"I think the hard thing is you just want to help. (Kristine) Lilly and I have a great relationship and we find strength in one another and when something happens on the field we can look at each other and say we’ll get it the next time. Not having that connection during the game was hard. It’s just the little things. The relationships with the people, the eye contact, the knowing exactly how they feel. I can’t know exactly how they feel because I wasn’t on the field. That’s the part I missed the most."

On not playing against Germany…
"A year ago, I probably would have said I was disappointed and felt sorry for myself. But, there was just something special about putting on my jersey and my cleats for the first time in two weeks and standing in the middle of the field. It was pretty satisfying for me."

On Cat Reddick’s performance…
"Cat did a great job. I couldn’t of asked more from her at that position than I could have asked from myself."
