Aguinaga, Delgado, Cevallos to Lead Ecuador Versus United States on June 7 at Crew Stadium

CHICAGO (Friday, June 1, 2001) - Ecuador Men's National Team head coach Hernan Gomez has announced a strong 18-player roster for the South American team's two-game trip to North and Central America next week.

Gomez picked a roster of mostly domestic-based players, including goalkeeper Jose Cevallos and midfielder Ulises de la Cruz (both from Barcelona of Ecuador). High-scoring forward Agustin Delgado and attacking midfielder Alex Aguinaga, both of whom play professionally for Necaxa of Mexico, lead a contingent of four foreign-based players available for the trip.

Ecuador will face the United States on Thursday, June 7 at Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The match, which will be televised live on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and shown via tape delay on Telemundo at 11 p.m. ET, marks the U.S. Men's National Team's third visit to Crew Stadium in the last nine months.

Ecuador has been one of the surprises in CONMEBOL (South American) World Cup qualifying, where they currently stand in third place with 22 points (7-4-1 record). Ecuador achieved an historic first-ever win over world power Brazil, 1-0, on March 28 in Quito. The top four teams in South American qualifying will automatically qualify for the 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan and the fifth-place finisher in South America will playoff against the Oceania champion.

Ecuador, which has won its last four qualifying matches along the way, will put its winning streak on the line when they travel to Peru for a qualifier June 2 before traveling directly into Columbus on Monday, June 4.

Ecuador playmaker Alex Aguinaga is the oldest and most experienced player on the squad at age 32 and with 77 career caps with the full national team. His 17 career international goals are the most on the team, just one better than Augustin Delgado, his teammate for Mexican club team Necaxa.

The 26-year-old Delgado has scored 16 goals in 35 career international appearances for Ecuador, including all three goals in Ecuador's last two victories versus Paraguay and Brazil. In the current World Cup Qualifying campaign, the 6'1" forward's numbers are even more impressive, with seven strikes in 11 matches.

Veteran goalkeeper Cevallos has appeared in all 12 World Cup Qualifying matches, posting five shutouts along the way and allowing just 15 goals for a respectable goals against average of just 1.25.

The roster also includes veteran defender Ivan Hurtado (Tigres - Mexico), who already has 64 career caps by the age of 26 and has appeared in 10 of the 12 World Cup Qualifying matches. The last of the four foreign-based players on the roster is young midfielder Edwin Tornio (Tiburnoes - Mexico), who has earned 10 of his 12 career caps for Ecuador during this qualifying campaign.

In seven all-time meetings against the United States, Ecuador is undefeated, with a 4-0-3 record against the U.S. that includes a 1-0 victory in the teams' last meeting back on August 7, 1997 in Baltimore, Md.

Tickets for the international friendly against Ecuador, which is sponsored by Budweiser, are priced at $32 (sideline), $24 (corner) and $18 (end). Tickets are available by calling TicketMaster at 614-431-3600 or going online at www.us-soccer.com.
